OptionalDetailOnDemand

Users are easily overwhelmed by too many options or choices so it is more inviting and less intimidating to initially present only the information that is most likely desired, with additional detail available on demand.

Possible Aliases:

Context

Challenge (or Problem)

Examples

  • Home pages that are too "busy." Many portals may be like this.

DONEForces

  • An experienced user may want more options immediately available but this is likely to be intimidating to a less experienced user.
  • If people are offered more options than they can absorb, they don't do anything.
  • 80/20 rule may apply - i.e. people get 80% of the value they seek out of 20% of the information.
