Hear that long snake moan - Voodoo and rock musiclink-outside.gif
This essay by Michael Ventura has been one of my long-time favorites. Among the provocative themes it covers are:

  • That blues, rock and roll, as well as gospel and southern evangelical christianity all have their roots in voodoo.
  • That voodoo arose from the mixing of Irish and African cultures in the Carribean.

The above link is only to the second installment of the essay as originally published in Whole Earth Review (Spring & Summer 1987 issues). For some reason, that archive doesn't include the first installment. Here's a link to another archive of the whole article: Hear That Long Snake Moan. Oddly enough, this is a Baptist site. smile I suppose they are offering this as proof of there contention that R&R is inspired by the devil. I wonder what they think of this contention that most southern religious culture has the same roots?! Unfortunately, this version also edits out some of the language, presumably offensive to the poster. roll eyes (sarcastic) Anyway, they say that this not a permanent post so who knows how long it will be up.

TIP Later note: After seeing the limitations of the above references and wanting still to share this great article with friends, I decided to collect the whole article in a single text file which you can download by right-clicking here and select "save file as...".
